1. Take a slightly stale bakery loaf and cut it in half, then cut into 3/4-inch cubes and toss with 1/4 cup of olive oil and 1 teaspoon kosher salt (add other seasonings like dried herbs and garlic or onion powder, if desired).
2. Spread the cubes on a baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees F, stirring after 5 minutes; bake until they're deep golden brown, about 10 minutes total.
Toss in Unique Ingredients With all of the colorful ingredients in a salad (tomatoes, carrots, peppers, olives, and of course, the greens), how about adding some white ingredients for a little bit of pop and a new flavor twist?1. Hearts of Palm - they come in a jar and have a similar taste to artichoke hearts; slice them up into small rounds before adding to the salad.
2. Jicama (pronounced HE-kuh-muh) - it looks a little bit like a flat potato; peel and dice or cube it to add to a salad (the flavor of the crisp white inside is sort of a cross between apples and green beans - I know, it's an odd combination to consider, right?).
3. Fennel is crunchy and sweet and is easy to slice thin for adding to salads (with or without the feathery green fronds from its top).
Add Salad Dressing Whether you make your own dressing (see recipes) or use a bottled version, be sure to add the salad dressing only right before serving. Otherwise, the dressing will quickly make the salad greens limp and soggy. If you want to make the salad ahead and are planning to toss it when serving, you could place the salad dressing in the bottom of the bowl, gently laying the other salad ingredients on top of it and then chill, covered, until ready to eat. Simply toss it and scoop dressing from bottom when ready to serve. Layering or Arranging Salad Salads, even super salads, don't always have to be tossed. Be creative and decorative, arranging the salad toppings in piles over a large platter of salad greens or layering the ingredients in a deep dish and serve with dressing on the side. Super salads served like this look particularly stunning and are fun for serving guests.
