Substitute 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar for 1/2 cup dry red wine, if preferred. Also can substitute 2 teaspoons dried basil for the fresh basil. Using crushed tomatoes will give a smooth, thick sauce, or whole tomatoes can be used to add nice chunkiness.

Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoons - olive oil
- 1 cups - chopped onion
- 4 cloves - garlic minced
- 1/2 cups - dry red wine
- 1 tablespoons - sugar
- 1 tablespoons - fresh basil chopped
- 2 tablespoons - tomato paste
- 1/2 teaspoons - dried Italian seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoons - black pepper
- 2 cans - diced tomatoes undrained
- 2 tablespoons - fresh parsley chopped
Directions:
Heat oil in a saucepan or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; saute 5 minutes. Stir in wine and next 6 ingredients (wine through tomatoes), and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, and cook, uncovered, about 15 minutes. Stir in parsley.
