    Substitute 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar for 1/2 cup dry red wine, if preferred. Also can substitute 2 teaspoons dried basil for the fresh basil. Using crushed tomatoes will give a smooth, thick sauce, or whole tomatoes can be used to add nice chunkiness.

Ingredients:

  1. 1 teaspoons - olive oil
  2. 1 cups - chopped onion
  3. 4 cloves - garlic minced
  4. 1/2 cups - dry red wine
  5. 1 tablespoons - sugar
  6. 1 tablespoons - fresh basil chopped
  7. 2 tablespoons - tomato paste
  8. 1/2 teaspoons - dried Italian seasoning
  9. 1/4 teaspoons - black pepper
  10. 2 cans - diced tomatoes undrained
  11. 2 tablespoons - fresh parsley chopped

Directions:

Heat oil in a saucepan or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; saute 5 minutes. Stir in wine and next 6 ingredients (wine through tomatoes), and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, and cook, uncovered, about 15 minutes. Stir in parsley.
