Olive Garden Style Bread Sticks

  1. 1 1/2 cups - warm water
  2. 1 packages - active dry yeast
  3. 4 1/2 cups - bread flour
  4. 2 tablespoons - unsalted butter or margarine
  5. 2 tablespoons - sugar
  6. 1 tablespoons - salt
  7. 1/2 cups - unsalted butter or margarine
  8. 1 teaspoons - garlic powder
  9. 1 teaspoons - salt


In large mixer bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water and allow to sit for 10 minutes, until mixture is frothy. Add flour, salt, and melted butter to yeast mixture; mix with dough hook or paddle attachment of stand mixer or with a spoon until fully combined. If using mixer, continue to mix on low speed for a few minutes to accomplish kneading; if not using mixer, knead dough by hand for a few minutes (adding flour if necessary) just until dough is smooth. Do not over knead!
Grease a baking sheet. Divide dough into 12 even pieces and roll each piece out into a strip roughly 8 inches long; then place on prepared baking sheet. Cover and let sit in a warm place for one hour.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and bake bread sticks for 6-7 minutes. While they bake, prepare garlic butter by melting butter and stirring in garlic powder and salt. After bread sticks have baked for 6-7 minutes, remove from oven and brush bread sticks with half the garlic butter mixture.
Return the bread sticks to the oven and continue to bake for 6-8 more minutes until lightly browned. After removing from oven, immediately brush the other half of garlic butter onto sticks, and allow to cool for a few minutes before eating.
