Chocolate Chip Date Cake

Ingredients:

  1. 1 cups - water
  2. 1 cups - chopped dates
  3. 1 cups - shortening
  4. 1 cups - sugar
  5. 2 - eggs
  6. 1 teaspoons - vanilla
  7. 3/4 cups - flour
  8. 1/2 teaspoons - salt
  9. 1 teaspoons - baking soda
  10. 2 teaspoons - cocoa
  11. 1 cups - chopped nuts divided
  12. 1 cups - chocolate chips divided
  13. - powdered sugar for topping

Directions:

Bring water to a boil in sauce pan; add dates and set aside to cool.

Cream together shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add date mixture.

Combine flour, salt, baking soda and cocoa; gradually add to egg mixture.

Stir in 1/2 cup of nuts and 1/2 cup of chocolate chips. Pour into greased and floured 9-x-13-inch baking pan.

Sprinkle remaining nuts and chocolate pieces on top.

Bake at 350 degrees F for about 40 minutes. Remove from oven and dust with powdered sugar.
