Notes:
To make Strudel from this bread: Take 1/4 of the dough and roll thin (as for noodles). Spread with butter and a mixture of apples, raisins, pecans, sugar, and cinnamon; spread on dough. Roll up jelly roll fashion and brush with egg yolk. Let rise and bake at 350° for 45 minutes or less.

Ingredients:
- 1 cups - Sugar
- 1/2 cups - Shortening
- 1 1/2 teaspoons - Salt
- 2 whole - Eggs beaten
- 3 packages - Yeast
- 1 1/2 cups - Warm Water
- 6 cups - Flour
- 1/2 cups - Raisins
- 1 whole - Egg Yolk
- - Poppy or Caraway Seeds
Directions:
Soften the yeast in 1/2 cup of warm water. Mix together the sugar, shortening, salt, eggs, softened yeast, and 1 cup warm water. Add 2 cups flour. Let dough sit in a warm place until mixture bubbles like a sponge. Add the remaining flour and knead; add the raisins as kneading. Let dough rise in a bowl.
Form dough into 2 loaves. Brush with egg yolk and sprinkle with poppy or caraway seeds. Let loaves rise again.
Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or less.
