Applesauce Cake with Caramel Frosting

Ingredients:

  1. 2 1/2 cups - flour
  2. 2 cups - sugar
  3. 1/2 teaspoons - baking powder
  4. 1 1/2 teaspoons - baking soda
  5. 1 1/2 teaspoons - salt
  6. 3/4 teaspoons - cinnamon
  7. 1/2 teaspoons - cloves
  8. 1/2 teaspoons - allspice
  9. 1/2 cups - soft shortening 1 stick margarine at room temperature
  10. 1/2 cups - water
  11. 1 1/2 cups - applesauce
  12. 2 - eggs
  13. 1/2 cups - margarine
  14. 1 cups - brown sugar firmly packed
  15. 1 pinchs - salt
  16. 1/4 cups - milk
  17. 2 1/2 cups - powdered sugar sifted
  18. 1/2 teaspoons - vanilla extract

Directions:

For the cake:
Preheat oven to 350˚
Blend all ingredients for 30 seconds on lowest speed. Beat 3 minutes on medium speed, scraping bowl often.
Pour into greased and floured 9x13. Bake.

For the frosting:
Melt margarine in saucepan.
Stir in brown sugar and salt, then cook 3 minutes over low heat, stirring constantly.
Add milk, stirring constantly until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar, then add vanilla and mix well.
