This is my dad's all-time favorite cake, and we often have it for his birthday (sometimes in addition to his other favorite, 7-Layer Bars).

Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups - flour
- 2 cups - sugar
- 1/2 teaspoons - baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons - baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons - salt
- 3/4 teaspoons - cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoons - cloves
- 1/2 teaspoons - allspice
- 1/2 cups - soft shortening 1 stick margarine at room temperature
- 1/2 cups - water
- 1 1/2 cups - applesauce
- 2 - eggs
- 1/2 cups - margarine
- 1 cups - brown sugar firmly packed
- 1 pinchs - salt
- 1/4 cups - milk
- 2 1/2 cups - powdered sugar sifted
- 1/2 teaspoons - vanilla extract
Directions:
For the cake:
Preheat oven to 350˚
Blend all ingredients for 30 seconds on lowest speed. Beat 3 minutes on medium speed, scraping bowl often.
Pour into greased and floured 9x13. Bake.
For the frosting:
Melt margarine in saucepan.
Stir in brown sugar and salt, then cook 3 minutes over low heat, stirring constantly.
Add milk, stirring constantly until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar, then add vanilla and mix well.
