  • 1 teaspoons - olive oil
  • 1 cups - chopped onion
  • 4 cloves - garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cups - dry red wine
  • 1 tablespoons - sugar
  • 1 tablespoons - fresh basil, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons - tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoons - dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoons - black pepper
  • 2 cans - diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 tablespoons - fresh parsley, chopped
  • Directions:

    Heat oil in a saucepan or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; saute 5 minutes. Stir in wine and next 6 ingredients (wine through tomatoes), and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, and cook, uncovered, about 15 minutes. Stir in parsley.

    Substitute 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar for 1/2 cup dry red wine, if preferred.
    Also can substitute 2 teaspoons dried basil for the fresh basil.
    Using crushed tomatoes will give a smooth, thick sauce, or whole tomatoes can be used to add nice chunkiness.
